Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year

It’s fair to say Chinese New Year represents one of the busiest times of the year in the SK kitchen.

Only Christmas is busier for us and as an example this year will be providing 1.5 million pieces of prawn toast, 2 million spring rolls and hundreds of thousands spare ribs, lemon chicken and wontons.

You don’t need to be Chinese to celebrate Chinese New Year and given how amazing Chinese food is, there are certainly no excuses for tucking in to mark the occasion, so what should you eat?

Burns Night

Burns Night

It’s Burns Night so hands up, who likes haggis?

Haggis is a traditional Scottish sausage made from a sheep’s stomach stuffed with diced sheep’s liver, lungs and heart, oatmeal, onion, suet and seasoning. It’s one of those dishes that doesn’t sound the most appetising (stomach, liver and heart!) but trust us, it delicious!

We for one will be tucking into it tonight, along with some tatties and neeps, and a wee dram. If you still can’t be persuaded the vegetarian alternative is also great (and it is still Veganuary), but you can also mark Burns Night by trying some other amazing Scottish food?

Hot chocolate

Hot chocolate

Who doesn’t like Hot Chocolate and no, we are not talking about the 1970s British soul band!

Do you scoop a few spoonfuls out of a tin and add to hot milk?

Do you add marshmallows and cream? Or do you have a hot chocolate recipe handed down through the family?

Halloween food

Halloween

Halloween is a great time to get crafty but your creativity doesn’t need to stop at the decorations and costumes. You can get really imaginative with the party food too!

Kids just love being presented with bugs, blood and guts and other gruesome looking food at the table and you’ll be amazed at what most of them will try when it’s dressed up as something ghastly. And the great thing is, unless you really want to, you don’t have to work too hard to create a fabulous Halloween spread!

Mexican Independence Day

Mexican Independence Day

Why not use Mexican Independence Day (September 16th) – as an excuse to enjoy a themed dinner?

Don’t worry about it being too spicy, there’s options for everyone and if you’re cooking it yourself, you can be as brave (or restrained) as you like with the spice! The main thing about Mexican food is the flavors – deep, bold and fresh is the order of the day!

Back to school Jerk Wrap

Back to School Week

Isn’t it hard to get back into the routine after such a long summer break?

Getting those packed lunches sorted and of course the snacks ready when the hordes come streaming through the door declaring: “I’m starving…….what have we got to eat?”

Burger Day

The Burger is King

The Burger is King and on National Burger Day who could argue?

The humble hamburger has come a long way over the years. Its true origins are something of a mystery. Hamburger patties originated, surprisingly enough, in Hamburg, Germany, but when you think of them today, you are more likely to bring to mind the good old US of A.

Football and food

Football and food

Football and food, the two go together like Messi and Neymar, Shearer and Sheringham and Dalglish and Rush

We love football at SK, but as we are all about the food (there’s another song for you Meghan) we find it intriguing what the modern day footballer now eats.

American food

God bless American food

We love American food – there’s sometimes nothing better than a burger, fries and onion rings – with all the “fixin’s” of course. Pickle, mustard, relish and ketchup. A good American meal should need several napkins (we one ate in a restaurant in New York called Five Napkin Burger!) and leave you with a food-stained face.
