News is out that Costco are selling an apocalypse food kit which it promises will keep you and your family fed for a year should disaster strike – when presumably it will be safe to venture out of your shed or whatever you’ve been using as a bunker.

Now, here at SK Chilled Foods, we wouldn’t call ourselves “Preppers” (the nickname given to those who are REALLY prepared for any impending doom), but the kit does sound like a good idea and not just for those who are getting ready for a catastrophic event.

After all, sometimes none of us can be bothered to do the food shopping and with this summer’s sports schedule, if you get a few beers in alongside this kit, you might not have to venture from the couch for weeks.

Some people really take being prepared seriously with reports of a man from Phoenix who keeps 1,000 fish in the deep end of his swimming pool which he plans to eat “when a massive solar flare hits”. And then there’s the couple (also in the US) who live in a gated-home with 25,000 rounds of ammunition and enough food to last half a century.

The kit from Costco doesn’t promise to last 50 years – and it would cost a bit to get enough of them to do so as they retail at £4,330 each – but they do say that the “Nutristore One-year Premium Food Kit” comes with a huge 36,000 servings and a shelf-life of 25 years for some of the items. We might have some things in our cupboards at home which might rival that age…..

And don’t fret if it’s just little ol’ you waiting out the storm – you can get single-person kits for just £721.

The Costco website promises that the kits come packed with grains, fruits, vegetables, proteins, dairy and more and that it can feed your family members 2,000 calories a day, each. The foods include freeze-dried onions, strawberries, bananas and raspberries as well as instant black beans and dehydrated carrots. So, you should get your five a day.

Storage might be the biggest issue as we think 36,000 additional items for your store cupboard may take up a bit of space. But, that’s a small issue when, as Costco says you can: “Enjoy the comfort in knowing you have the essential foods your family will need to survive an emergency or natural disaster!” Quite.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem the kit is available in the UK currently. However, it got us thinking about what we might want to add, just to make it a bit more personal and so we wouldn’t just be eating freeze-dried or tinned foods for 52 weeks. What couldn’t we live without? After all, who said containment couldn’t also be delicious?

We think our top kit additions would be:

  • Chocolate – obviously
  • Wine/Beer – ditto
  • Crisps – we’ll not get into flavours, it will start an argument. Let’s go for mixed packs – keep everyone happy…..
  • Bhajis – always comforting, always delicious
  • Spring rolls – ditto
  • Crusty bread and butter
  • Cheese – lots of cheese (to go with the bread and butter)
  • Pizza – with or without pineapple as a topping, we doubt we’ll be fussy!

However, the main problem will be making the additional items last over the first weekend, never mind 365 days….
