St Andrew’s Day

Today is St Andrew’s Day, the celebration of Scotland’s patron saint.

It’s a bank holiday in Scotland (why don’t we get one for St George’s Day?) and the fact it falls on a Friday this year must be manna from heaven for our friends north of the border, not that they need an excuse for a ‘wee swally’!

It’s also a great time to celebrate everything that is great about Scottish food, and no we are not talking about a fried Mars bar!

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving

With everything else we have embraced from our American cousins across the Pond, it’s a little surprising that we haven’t also ‘stolen’ Thanksgiving.

Think of Halloween (let’s be honest it’s only fairly recently that we have started making it a ‘thing’ in the UK), fast food (American favourites like Dennys, Five Guys, Shake Shack and Taco Bell have all started springing up on our island in recent years) and Black Friday (which is linked to Thanksgiving anyway!).

And given we already piggy-bag on the celebrations of other countries, St Patrick’s Day and Burn’s Night to name just two, why haven’t we jumped on the Thanksgiving bandwagon, especially when it celebrates English Pilgrims arriving in the USA?

School dinners

School dinners

We’ve only got our children to verify this, but school dinners (we’re in the North-East so it will always be dinner, not lunch) these days just don’t seem to be what they were.

Don’t get us wrong, from a nutritional standpoint, they’re definitely better, and it’s great that our kids are eating healthy, balanced meals (although this is not across the board) rather than the beige inspired creations we were used to, but it’s all got a little boring in our view.

Pink custard for example. When is the last time you had pink custard? People of a certain age will know exactly what we are talking about here.

Two awards

Two awards

SK Chilled Foods has scooped two awards in the food industry’s ‘Oscars’.

We walked away with the Chilled, Fresh & Dairy Manufacturing Company of the Year and Partnership of the Year award at the prestigious Food Manufacture Excellence Awards in London.

The two awards recognised the technical innovation that resulted in SK making record sales last year.
