Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year 2019

Chinese New Year is upon us again and chances are that if you are in any of the main UK supermarkets this weekend looking to stock up in time for 5th February (the official start of the year of the pig), you will be buying food made by our own fair hands.

Preparation for the 2019 Chinese New Year actually began in the development kitchen over a year ago and we’re already planning, believe it or not, for 2020. A year’s a long time in new product development!
But, back to this year.

Apparently, if you were born in 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2017 and 2019 (all years of the pig) you are in for an unlucky 12 months, but on that basis, let’s not put our fate in the hands of the zodiac and just concentrate on the food shall we?

Dry January

Dry January

No doubt many of you are observing Dry January.

Hands up though how many of you drank in the early hours of 1st January? I know I did, so let’s say, for the sake of argument that Dry January begins on 2nd January. Agreed?

That leaves us all, at the time of writing, ten days in to our dry spell. Some will not be missing the demon drink at all while others (me included) are already starting to waver. Well, the weekend is upon us and it’s been a hard week, let’s face it!

vegan sausage roll

Vegan sausage roll

With the news this week that Greggs have launched a vegan sausage roll (available from today Thursday) and McDonalds following this up with its first vegetarian happy meal, it’s safe to say that the meat-free trend is here to stay.

More and more people are going vegetarian, vegan, or flexitarian if the thought of giving meat up forever is too much to swallow.

Whether you stand on the debate, it’s good to see so any different options now available, and Greggs and McDonalds couldn’t have timed their announcements any better, what with January being a time when people are looking to eat healthier after gorging over the festive period.
