Is everybody enjoying Scottish Food and Drink Fortnight?

This is a nationwide event which supports and promotes Scotland’s produce and the people who grow, make, cook and sell it.

We’re big fans of Scottish food and are proud to make food here in the SK kitchen which is enjoyed by so many people north of the border.

Ask people south of the border about Scottish food and drink and they will probably think of haggis (although we do make some amazing haggis, neep and tattie bites), black pudding, deep friend mars bars and Irn Bru, but you don’t have to dig deep to discover there is so much more.

Here are just some of our favourites that some ‘Sassenachs’ may not have tried yet.

Stovies – there’s regional variations of this dish across the UK, such as Lancashire HotPot and Scouse, but we like the Scottish version the best and it’s easy to make as well. All you need is to combine diced lamb, sliced potatoes, sliced onion, beef stock and salt and pepper and you have a lovely one pot dish that will last for days.

Cullen Skink – it’s a great name for a great soup made using smoked haddock, onion, milk, butter, mashed potato and seasoning.

Lorne sausage – Once you try lorne sausage, also known as square sausage, you will never go back to traditional sausages. It’s the mixture of minced pork and been mixed with rusk and spices that really sets it apart; we never order anything else when we are in Scotland. We also make our own lorne sausage bites in tempura batter.

Beef olives – A combination of smoky bacon off-cuts, mixed together with fresh pork and wrapped in a thin beef topside steak and served with gravy, all adds up to the perfect comfort food.

Clootie dumpling – This suet and fruit pudding is lovely served with custard.

Cranachan – Toasted oatmeal served with cream and a little, or lot depending on your taste, whisky makes for this perfect dessert.

If that hasn’t whetted your appetite for Scottish food, nothing will!
