Though home may be 2000 miles away, a group of Ukrainian refugees were still able to celebrate their national day – with a little help from SK Foods.

The party was organised by British-Ukrainian Jurijs Harchenko and attended by over 20 refugees who are currently being hosted by families in the Middlesbrough area.

Jurijs himself was raised in Ukraine when it was still part of the Soviet Union. As a student he travelled across Europe and found work in the UK where he settled 20 years ago.

Now a British citizen, he lives with his wife Natalie and their two young children in Middlesbrough. A shop worker, he also helps out as a volunteer with the Ukrainian Teesside Refugee Support Group and decided to organise the event to mark Ukraine Independence Day in August.

Jurijs, 40, previously worked for several years with SK Foods at South Bank and after he approached the company, they agreed to donate food to the celebration. This included falafels, Indian selection packs, onion rings and chicken pakoras from the SK range.

“It was a lovely day where the refugees were able meet with others from Ukraine. People were very kind and also donated gifts for the children,” said Jurijs.

“SK Foods were very generous, there was plenty to eat, and we also had some left over which we donated to the local food bank.”

Benna Davis, SK Food’s Head of Product Development, said: “We were only too happy to support one of our former employees, in Jurijs, who is doing fantastic work with other volunteers helping the refugees who have moved to our area.”

The refugees come from various parts of the Ukraine including Kiev, Donbas and Kharkiv where they hope to one day return.
