Ramadan begins today. Ramadan, which is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, is a period of prayer, fasting, charity-giving and self-accountability for Muslims in the United Kingdom. Fasting during Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars (fundamental religious duties) of Islam and requires Muslims to fast during the daylight hours for the full month.
